![]() Ironically, I was on a session four days ago where the producer used the “Funky Drummer” loop for a song that I played on top of. As I discovered the tracks that I knew to be him, I was able to identify his style-how he played real tight, with a sound that was a sort of carryover from the jazz tuning-tight snare, small bass drum, not sounding like he was hitting real hard but getting an impact out of the attitude he played the drums with, which was a real powerful statement. When I first heard James Brown, I obviously wanted to know who the drummer was, and that’s when I became aware of Clyde Stubblefield. (Frank Zappa, Sting, session and stage legend) We’ll be presenting Clyde’s half of the piece in an upcoming post here we share quotes from three prominent drummers who went on record in that article singing the praises of “the funky drummer,” who died this past February 18 at the age of seventy-three. He passed away on February 18, 2017.Modern Drummer magazine’s September 1999 issue featured famed James Brown drummers Clyde Stubblefield and John “Jabo” Starks on the cover in a dual interview. Since it’s a James Brown track, the actual “Funky Drummer,” Clyde Stubblefield, wasn’t as highly recognized for his work on the track, and since he wasn’t credited as a songwriter, Clyde didn’t receive royalties from all the samples that used his drum pattern. The bassline came in and the guitar came in and we just had a rhythm going, and if Brown liked it, I just said, ‘Well, I’ll put something with it.‘ All the drum patterns I played with Brown was my own he never told me how to play or what to play, We were sitting up in the studio, getting ready for a session, and I guess when I got set up I just started playing a pattern. As of January 2020, more than 1,500 songs are credited with sampling this song songs use elements of this song in one way or another, most often borrowing Clyde Stubblefield’s iconic drum solo.Ĭlyde said the following about the creation of his famous drum break: Released in 1970, “Funky Drummer” is still heard today in various forms, as it’s one of the most sampled songs in history. ![]()
